Harmony Camp 2016

It was another fantastic few days of sharing stories, culture, food and fun at the annual Edmund Rice Centre WA Harmony Camp.

It was a time to celebrate our cultural diversity – the theme of the weekend was “Rainbow”. A variety of activities including a local Indigenous welcome and knowledge, family and children’s games and sporting activities, music and dancing, and a multi-faith celebration encouraged sharing and learning from each other. Group sessions provided opportunities to listen to the stories and life experiences of refugee families and learn to appreciate the gifts they bring to our communities. Naturally, eating together being such an enjoyable way of sharing cultures, a multicultural dinner and an Aussie BBQ were highlights!

The Common Goal Soccer Academy, launched in May 2016, is a community initiative that aims to:

  • foster positive relationships between young people from diverse communities
  • strengthen Police engagement with the community
  • provide opportunities to young people who may be disengaged or have had few opportunities in a sport and leadership environment, in particular young people from a multicultural background

Based on similar programmes initiated by the Edmund Rice Centre, Common Goal encourages young people to be physically active in an environment that promotes positive relationships. The programme consists of weekly training sessions as well as extension opportunities, including matches, excursions, professional development and leadership training. It is open to all young people aged 8-18 years old (male and female).
